Mercury retrograde in Scorpio: every loop since 2000, and what is different in 2026

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio: the sky at the next Scorpio station, 7 October 2027, on the outer ring of Maya's example birth chart
The outer ring is the sky at 14:36 UTC on 7 October 2027, when Mercury next stations retrograde in Scorpio, at 4°55′. The inner wheel is the birth chart of Maya, one of our example people (Toronto, 1994).

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio sounds like a rare event. It isn’t, and it keeps coming back in a very tidy rhythm. We asked our ephemeris for every Mercury station from 1975 to 2045, then kept each loop that touched Scorpio. Twelve have happened since 2000, and the 2026 one (covered in full in our October 2026 guide) is the latest. Here is the list, the reason it repeats, and what is different this time.

The ledger: every Mercury retrograde in Scorpio since 2000

A loop counts here if either station, the turn to retrograde or the turn to direct, fell in Scorpio. All times are UTC, found by bisection to the minute. The last row is the next one after 2026.

Every Mercury retrograde with a station in Scorpio from 2000, plus the next after 2026. Station times and degrees from the Charthood engine (astronomy-engine), found by bisection to the minute. Days are from station to station, shadows excluded.

The loops last between 19.8 and 21.1 days, so none of them stands out for length. The 2026 loop runs 20.4.

Three kinds of Scorpio retrograde

Sort the rows by shape and a pattern shows up. There are four loops that stay in Scorpio from start to finish (2006, 2013, 2019 and 2026). There are four that begin in Sagittarius and back into Scorpio (2005, 2012, 2018 and 2025). And there are four that begin in Scorpio and back into Libra (2000, 2007, 2014 and 2020).

In the ledger they come in runs of three loops in consecutive years, one of each shape. The runs start in 2005, 2012, 2018, 2025, 2031 and 2038. Look at the gaps: 7, 6, 7, 6 and 7 years, six and seven alternately. That regularity is the thing to explain.

Why does Mercury keep coming back to Scorpio?

It isn’t choosing Scorpio. It’s geometry, and the geometry is steady. Mercury laps Earth about every 116 days, and each overtaking produces one retrograde. Across the loops in our engine the average gap is 115.6 days. Over that time Earth has moved on round its orbit, so each new retrograde lands further along the zodiac: on average 114°.

That is close to 120°, a trine, so the three loops in a year sit in the same element. In 2026 they start in Pisces, Cancer and Scorpio, all water signs. But 114° is not quite 120°, so the set slips back each year. The autumn loop that stationed at 20°58′ Scorpio in 2026 sits 15.9° behind the 2025 one, and the 2027 one sits 16.1° behind 2026’s. After roughly two years a slot has left a sign, and a different slot arrives a few years later.

Counting loops back from the 2026 station at 20°58′ Scorpio. Offset is where the earlier retrograde station fell against that degree. Charthood engine, loops found between 1975 and 2045.

Count in loops instead of years and the repeat is plain. After 19 loops (about six years) Mercury is back within 10° of the same spot. After 22 (nearly seven) it is within 7°. Mix the two and you get runs six and seven years apart. Go further, to 41, 104 or 145 loops (about 13, 33 and 46 years), and the station comes back within 2.6°. If you’d like to see how positions like these are calculated, our explainer on the ephemeris starts from one Sun position found by hand.

What is different about the 2026 loop?

The full dates are in the October guide, so here are only the things that set it apart from the others in the ledger.

  • It is the middle one of its run. Only four loops since 2000 stay in Scorpio from station to station, and 2026 is the latest. The next to do so is in 2039, starting at 23°32′ Scorpio on 27 Oct 2039.
  • Venus is retrograde too. In the thirteen loops in the table, Venus was also retrograde during one: 2026. The closest miss was 2018, when Venus turned direct about 15 hours before Mercury turned retrograde. Our Venus retrograde 2026 preview has the details.
  • It hands over almost exactly. Mercury turns direct on 13 Nov 2026 at 5°02′ Scorpio. The next retrograde, on 7 Oct 2027 at 14:36 UTC, starts at 4°55′ Scorpio. That is 6′ of arc away, about a tenth of a degree.

Does a retrograde in Scorpio actually do anything?

The sky part is solid. Mercury does not turn round, and no physical change happens when it appears to.

“Retrograde motion is an APPARENT change in the movement of the planet through the sky. It is not REAL in that the planet does not physically start moving backwards in its orbit.”
NASA StarChild, Goddard Space Flight Center

The meaning part is interpretation. We can’t point you to reliable evidence that a Mercury retrograde, in Scorpio or anywhere else, changes what happens to people, and we don’t think you should take it on trust. Astrology works best as a prompt for reflection: a set time each few years to ask what you’ve been avoiding saying, and whether you’ve checked the details. Scorpio’s traditional themes (trust, shared money, privacy) simply give that prompt a topic.

Mistakes to avoid with a retrograde history

  • Dropping the time zone. A station at 01:26 UTC is still the previous evening in Chicago. Quote the zone, or the dates won’t match.
  • Mixing station sign and shadow sign. Sites differ on what “in Scorpio” means. We use the two stations. Shadows can reach into the neighbouring sign.
  • Finding patterns in thirteen rows. It’s a tiny sample, and with hindsight you can fit almost any story to it. The repeat is in the orbits, not in events.
  • Forgetting the house. The sign is the same for everyone. What it touches in your life depends on your chart.

Questions people ask

How often is Mercury retrograde in Scorpio?

In runs of three loops in consecutive years, then a gap of six or seven years. The runs started in 2005, 2012, 2018 and 2025, and the next starts in 2031. Within a run, one loop begins in Sagittarius and ends in Scorpio, one stays in Scorpio, and one begins in Scorpio and ends in Libra.

When is the next Mercury retrograde in Scorpio after 2026?

Mercury stations retrograde at 14:36 UTC on 7 October 2027 at 4°55′ Scorpio and turns direct at 14:13 UTC on 28 October 2027 at 19°18′ Libra. The 2026 loop turns direct at 5°02′ Scorpio, so 2027 starts within a tenth of a degree of where 2026 stops.

Has Mercury been retrograde in Scorpio at the same time as Venus before?

Not in any of the Scorpio loops since 2000. In 2018 Venus turned direct about 15 hours before Mercury turned retrograde, which is the closest miss. In 2026 the two overlap for about three weeks.

Does Mercury retrograde in Scorpio mean anything for me?

The dates are astronomy; the meanings are interpretation. We know of no reliable evidence that a retrograde changes events. If you like working with it, treat it as a prompt to check details and revisit conversations, and look at which house of your own chart the degrees fall in.
