Your big three

Three signs, not one

Your “star sign” is just where the Sun was. Two more placements change the picture more than any other, and most people only find them when they look up their full chart.

  1. What you're growing into

    Sun sign

The Sun is the core of the chart: what you're here to grow into and what makes you feel most like yourself. It's the part people mean when they ask your sign. It takes effort and years to live up to, which is why it often fits better at 35 than at 15.

  2. What you need to feel okay

    Moon sign

The Moon is your emotional weather: moods, comfort habits, what you reach for on a bad day. It's often the part close friends and partners know better than strangers do. If your Sun sign never felt quite right, read your Moon.

  3. How people meet you

    Rising sign

The Rising sign is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon when you were born. It's your first impression, your style and the way you start things. It changes about every two hours, which is why the birth time matters so much.

Your circle

Keep everyone's chart in one place

You've probably typed your partner's birthday into three different websites. Save it once. Charthood keeps your chart, your partner's, your sister's and your best friend's together, works out how any two fit, and shows what today's sky is doing to each of you.

Chart cards

Send your chart, get theirs back

Every chart can become a card: your wheel and your big three, sized for a group chat or a story. The link doubles as an invitation. Whoever opens it can put in their own birth details and see how your two charts fit together, free.

People who open your card see your placements, never your birth date, time or place.

Compatibility

How any two of you fit

Five scores, each built from the contacts between two charts and listed underneath it, so you can see why. Spark, warmth, talk, staying power, and friction, where a higher number means more heat, not less love.

Accuracy

The sums behind it

A chart is only as good as the sums behind it. A birth time an hour out moves your Rising sign, and plenty of calculators still get daylight saving wrong for births before 1970.

21″
Planet positions within 21 arcseconds of NASA JPL Horizons, tested on dates from 1931 to 2039.
1″
Placidus house cusps that agree with Swiss Ephemeris to within a second of arc.
1945
Clock changes handled: the time zone history of your birthplace, British Double Summer Time included.
0
Guesses. No birth time, no Rising sign. If a clock skipped your birth hour, we tell you.

Questions

Is the birth chart calculator really free?

Yes. Your full chart, your Sun, Moon and Rising signs, houses, aspects and today's transits are free, with no account and no card. You only need an account to save charts, and you only pay if you want the Circle plan for a bigger group of people.

What if I don't know my birth time?

Tick “I don't know the time” and we'll cast the chart for midday. Every planet's sign will still be right, except sometimes the Moon's, and we'll tell you if the Moon changed sign that day. The Rising sign and the houses need the time, so we leave them out rather than guess.

How accurate is it?

Planet positions come from astronomy-engine and match NASA JPL Horizons to within 21 arcseconds, far finer than the one arcminute a chart shows. House cusps agree with Swiss Ephemeris, the reference most astrology software uses, to within a second of arc. We also apply the time zone and daylight saving rules in force where and when you were born, wartime clock changes included.

Which house system do you use?

Placidus by default, because it's what most astrologers and sites use. You can switch any saved chart to Whole sign, Equal or Porphyry. Above the polar circles Placidus can't be drawn, so we use Porphyry and say so.

What happens to my birth details?

They're stored so your chart has a link you can come back to. We don't sell them or show them to anyone. If you make a chart card to share, people with the link see your placements but not your birth date, time or place.
